How to Write My Research Paper

One of the first things I did as a college student looking to get into grad school was to write my research paper. That was over two decades ago, however, and my writing has improved. But I still occasionally get lost in the weeds, and a solid paper writer's instinct kicks in. My mind starts to wander. What am I going to write?

A bit of practice goes a long way, and I now know what to do before I begin my research. Before you even begin writing your research papers, you'll want to have a clear outline of how you want to proceed. You'll also want to make sure that your research is well organized. If you don't start with an outline, you'll be running around and trying to figure things out at the last minute, which can waste time and get you stuck in a rut.

Once you have an outline for your paper, you're ready to begin writing your paper proposal. First, you'll need to choose a topic for your paper. Choose an area that interests you, or at least has some current interest for you. For example, if you're interested in automobiles, you could research recent advances in auto technology. If engineering is your thing, you could write about the latest advances in engineering techniques.

As you brainstorm ideas for your paper, remember that your research paper will be different from all of the other research papers written all over the world. This is your special piece, and your only chance at writing a good paper. There are no other papers like yours. You need to take charge. It's your paper, and it's your job.

One of the most important steps to write my research paper is organization. You need to separate the various points and information you are going to include in your paper into easily manageable piles. At a minimum, you need three piles: one for the data you are collecting and organizing, one for the sources you are using and obtaining them, and a third pile for writing the paper. You may want to use a filing system, such as a traditional file folder. Or, you may want to use an online paper-management system, such as OneNote or KeepTheWeb handy. Whichever system you choose, make sure it's easy for you to use and that you can find what you need quickly and easily.

You should also consider the structure of your paper, especially the section headings. Many research papers start with an introduction, a discussion of the paper's main points, and then go on to detail on each of those points. If this process seems overwhelming, you can always break it up in smaller sections. Break your paper up into a five-minute outline, a ten-minute summary, and then a main body of the research paper that focuses on one or two specific topics.

In order to write a better paper, it's important that you're able to collect the best available information as possible. When sourcing your sources, remember that you're likely collecting different types of information. For instance, if you're writing about a particular area of science, you'll likely have citations to scientific studies and personal experience. Make sure that you're using citations from reliable sources and that they're consistent throughout the paper.

Lastly, in order to write a better research paper, you need to remember that you're writing for a class, not for yourself. Your classmates will be grading your paper, and you don't want to ruin your chances by dropping the ball here. Always cite your sources and use them in a concise manner. Also, consult other students' work to learn how they used sources and citations in their paper. Don't plagiarize someone else's work without their permission! This is a serious sin in the field of research papers, and you'll find most students will warn against it before you've even written your paper.
